Are you looking for a scenic break in the South of England?
Weymouth is a quintessential English seaside town, offering all the thrills and spills of a British vacation.
Welcome to Dorset’s third-largest settlement, a town with a population of over 52,000 people and a winning sense of civic pride.
First settled in the 12th century, the small settlement established itself as a seaport by the mid 13th-century. Over the centuries Weymouth grew in stature and soon came to engulf a number of smaller villages, which still exist to this day within the remit of the town. Wyke Regis is one of these settlements and has its own piece of history in the remnants of the 16th-century Sandsfoot Castle. Portland Castle, on the Isle of Portland just south of Weymouth, is an example of a 16th-century Device Fort that has stayed in miraculously good condition.
Whilst History buffs will no doubt be kept happy with these novel sights, there’s plenty on offer for those who’d rather simply put their feet up. There’s a bounty of wonderful restaurants to enjoy, not to mention some excellent pubs and bars that have a buzzing community of their own for you to explore. Come at the right time of year and you’ll be able to take advantage of a spree of free events that attract thousands of visitors from all over the world.
